Bill Gates Visits The Philippines, Goes To Palawan For IRRI

MANILA, Philippines - The billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, the wealthiest man in the world, was seen in Los Baños, Laguna on Wednesday.

Tony Lambino, head of communications for International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), did not confirm nor deny the presence of Gates. The said private jet which has a registration number of N887WM was spotted to have parked at the Asian AerospaceHangar in the General Aviation Area of NAIA.

Gates was likely to consult with the IRRI officials for the development of rice research. Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has become the largest investor in which had invested $20 million in research for Golden Rice variety developed in IRRI. The co-founder of Microsoft Corp., last visited the country in 1998 after giving up the day-to-day operation of the company.

The genetically modified crop is envisioned to solve hunger and malnutrition in developing countries, but the project has seen some opposition from environmental groups who have warned against against supposed potential hazards to the environment.

Sources said that Gates has been in the country since April 4 and is expected to leave the country next week. The visit of the multi-billionaire is said to be Top Secret.
