Once food enters the body, nutrients are not readily absorbed. The stomach needs to break the food down before it can release the nutrients needed for the body. The majority of nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestines where the final site of hydrolysis takes place.
What happens then if it takes too long to digest our food?
Of course, when digestion takes too long than it should, the absorption of nutrients take a while too. We are not able to get the nutrients we need on time. A viral video of what happens to processed ramen inside the stomach that has gone viral may shed some light on this.
In this video, a team of researchers conduct an experiment if slow digestion affects nutrient absorption. It can be seen that the processed ramen noodles takes longer to digest compared to home-made ramen noodles. A smart pill (a camera the size of a multivitamin) was swallowed with the food for researchers to be able to observe the process clearly and closely. A staggering 32 hours pass by and little digestion was done.
The abundant nutrient in ramen noodles is Carbohydrates. Though not being able to absorb that much carbs does not affect our body that much, we come to thinking is it the same with other processed foods?
